Mike Lonergan up for UNC-Wilmington job?
According to HoopDirt.com, Vermont's Mike Lonergan could be up for the UNC-Wilmington position. Kansas assistant Joe Dooley and Texas assistant Mark Byington are also named as possible candidates. UNC-Wilmington fired Benny Moss last week after a once again crappy start by the team.
Honestly, I wouldn't read much into it. I think Lonergan can do much better then UNC-Wilmington. However, as discussed during out chat earlier tonight, I think a America East title would really help his resume. It would open the door for even bigger positions. I honestly don't think UVM fans have anything to worry about.

America Least "Separation Week" and the Game of the Week
ESPN may have its Bracketbuster and Rivalry Weeks. However, we are dubbing this week "Separation Week" in the America East. This is the week where we can start seeing teams separate themselves from the rest of the pack and the conference tournament starting to take shape. The first of the key games is tomorrow night in Boston. The Catamounts travel to BU. Vermont can make a statement and say it's going to battle for the number one spot. They destroyed BU earlier this season. For BU, its looking for revenge at home. A victory by BU would all but throw the seeding for the conference tournament into a battle royal.
The America Least Game of the Week however is on Wednesday night, at least we hope it is. Maine travels to Stony Brook. Stony Brook is seeking redemption for a 67-61 loss to Maine early in conference play. Maine, with a victory, could jump into a tie for first place. While we aren't going to go crazy analyzing the game this time (sorry guys), it could be the best match of the season. However, with the Jekyl and Hyde play of Maine this year, I think Stony Brook has the advantage. The only question is will the game be played Wednesday. A major winter storm is set to hit Long Island on Wednesday and could dump a foot or more in the region.
This also could be a big week for Hartford and Binghamton. Hartford most likely will get above .500 after playing UMBC. However, the schedule then gets brutal. They must take on BU in Boston before taking on Vermont at home. Forget they then have to play Binghamton and Maine before closing out with Albany to end the regular season.
For Binghamton, this could be the make or break week. They take on UNH, which should be a victory. Then they take on Stony Brook on Long Island over the weekend. Maybe the second best game of the week, as the Bearcats knocked off the Seawolves 64-62 last time out.
Let's not forget the game I a dubbing the "Play-in-Game Preview". Albany takes on UMBC in Baltimore on Saturday. We should see who will be the worst team in the conference going into the tournament. Get the popcorn ready for that one!
It should be an interesting week in the America East. Get ready, because "Separation Week" is upon us!

Posterization Debate
Let the debate begin! Who got posterized worse by Marqus Blakely? Last night, Blakely had a sick dunk on Maine's Terrance Mitchell. Check out the 1:01 mark of the video below:
Just unreal. So is that dunk even better then the dunk on UAlbany's Brent Wilson? You be the judge:
I must say, it the tough. Vote for the winner on the right side of the page!

National Signing Day brings recruit to UNH?
Today is National Signing Day around the country. UNH may have nailed down a small forward because of it. Harold Spears of The Pennington School (NJ) picked New Hampshire for football, that has been confirmed. The big question is will he be playing basketball at UNH? NorthstarBBall.com makes me think that it could happen. However, sooner or later we should find out.
According to Scouts, Spears started playing football for the first time during the 2008 season, in which he ran the 40 in 4.6 seconds. In basketball, he has averaged around 15+ points per game and has scored over 1,000 points in his career at The Pennington School. Like we said, we will wait and see. It could be a good pick-up for UNH on the hard court and the gridiron.

The unlucky season
That's really what 2009-10 should be called for Boston University. Especially if something crazy happens to them in the tournament as I'm sure it will. I think the season has been somewhat unfair to the boys, but I guess you could argue that for Binghamton too. Minus getting Chambers and a bevy of Philly recruits plus the transfers for NEXT year, this year has been one that I've bitten my fingernails down raw for the duration.
Really, it's just injuries that continue to come to starters, bench players, fans even. Honestly, if John Holland and Corey Lowe got hurt Thursday against UNH I wouldn't be surprised. Almost every Terrier has had some ailment this year, and the season still has a full month and then some left. Ugh.
The other reason this is the unlucky season - BU has to play Delaware again. I've had enough of them! I saw TWO losses in the last two years against the Blue Hens. I can't take another and I don't want to watch BU play them again. Granted, the Bob Carpenter Center is pretty awesome and I did accidentally have the top of my American flag pole fly off the pole and into play during a game. And they have had the best concessions, right in front of Harvard, in an arena for me to date, but really, let's move on from Delaware.
We didn't schedule them during the regular season in hopes we'd draw them in the BracketBuster.
It's time the AEC got real good again so we can play some west coast games. Maybe in like 10 years, when we get Jamar Wilson's lovechild at one of the SUNY schools or something.

Rant: The NCAA better get its head out of its ass!
Ok, so I have been reading about a rumor going around the web. It has hit the AE Forum and I have read it from other boards as well. It is the rumor about the NCAA Tournament. Apparently, according to SportsbyBrooks.com, the NCAA is preparing to soon announce that the NCAA Tournament field will expand from 64 to...96! My response is very clear: ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
If the NCAA was to do this, it once again proves it cares about nothing but the almighty dollar. This does nothing for the sport. In fact, it makes the regular season all but meaningless. This move is designed to kill off lower-level postseason tournaments, expand revenue for the NCAA and allow more BCS schools into the tournament. Plain and simple!
The NCAA knows that the NIT and other newly created postseason tournaments are gaining favor. While the NCAA Tournament use to be the end all be all to a teams season, these other tournaments are allowing some (obviously not all attention) to be taken away from the major tournament. However, it is clear that these lower-level tournaments are to allow mid-majors a chance to also see postseason play despite falling short in winning a conference title. It is clear that the NCAA is turning its back on mid-major conferences, including the America East, by this move.
With the fact the NCAA is trying to end these lower-level tournaments for mid-majors, it shows that the NCAA cares very little for the programs in these conferences. A move to 96 teams would do little to help mid-major schools. Instead, it would allow big time BCS programs who are having shitty seasons (in this case UConn or UNC) to still be seen. God for bid the NCAA allows two America East teams into the tournament, with an RPI between 120-200, over a UConn team with possibly 10+ losses on an offseason with an RPI between 30-80. The NCAA won't allow it. This allows the teams on the bubble, like UConn, UNC and Florida to make the NCAA Tournament. Then they won't feel guilty about taking a second America East team. Talk about shitting on the little guy.
Finally, this move is clearly a greed move. All of this deals with money. The NCAA according to the article is in talks with three, THREE, major broadcasting companies, including ESPN. You are talking about a mega deal that would shatter the amount CBS has paid to broadcast the tournament for years. Of course, when you have a chance to promote your BCS schools and get them more TV time, it is clear. However, what else should we expect from the NCAA? They refuse to even talk about a playoff for football. Doing this would apparently hurt BCS schools. By making the 96 team tournament, this would clearly help those BCS schools, while appeasing mid-major schools.
The lust of the NCAA Tournament has died over the past few years. The entrance of a 65th team and a play-in-game has hurt it. While a move to 68, which is on the table, would probably leave as much lust as the move to 65 did, a move to 96 would all but kill this tournament. The magic of the NCAA Tournament would be dead with all the miracle shots and Cinderella teams of the past.
